A new addition to the
Autumn 2000 Conference Programme

Friday 24 November
SSNW and ADSS North West

PEOPLE NEED PEOPLE
Applying Human Resource Principles

A dissemination event on Friday 24th November 2000
covering the Joint Review report "People need People"
and the TOPSS National Training Strategy

The aim of this event is to disseminate two major contributions to the management of human resources in the social care sector. Recent years have seen a focus on the move of Social Service Departments from providers of service to commissioners, however social care is a people intensive activity whoever is the provider and attention is now, rightly, being directed to ensuring that those people can give of their best.

"People need People" is a report from the Joint Reviews Team that is a result of the examination of the first 40 reviews. Key messages are that:

· Effective social service agencies manage their staff well
· Most councils could improve their services by applying known human resource principles more consistently.

David N Jones wrote the report and he will present the work at the event.

"Modernising the Social Care Workforce" is the first national training strategy for England and now has the approval of the Secretary of State. TOPSS, as the licensed National Training Organisation in the social care sector, has the overall responsibility for the coherence of training and education. Andrea Rowe, TOPSS Chief Executive, will bring participants up to date with the implementation of the strategy and stress the role of employers in stating their requirements for a supply of trained and qualified staff.

Councillor Cliff Morris, Chair of Social Services NorthWest, will chair the event. Both speakers will make presentations and will be pleased to take questions and enter debate in a plenary format.
