MEETING ON 16 MARCH 2001 AT HALTON REPORT OF THE CO-ORDINATOR 1. Matter for consideration Continuing links with the Local Government Association following the joint meeting between Social Services North West and the LGA held in Bolton on 11 October 2000. 2. Information 2.1 At its meeting in June 2000, Social Services North West agreed to offer to host a regional meeting with the Local Government Association Social Affairs and Health Executive. This was in pursuit of the agreed objective to develop closer links with the Local Government Association, to support and inform their representation of social services issues nationally. The meeting took place on 11 October, and the LGA was represented by Councillor Rita Stringfellow (North Tyneside), Chair of the LGA Social Affairs and Health Executive, John Ransford, Head of Social Affairs, Health and Housing and Councillor Pat Case (Chorley), a member of the Executive. A wide-ranging and constructive discussion took place on the four key issues in our Annual Work Programme, and the meeting was fully reported to the last meeting. 2.2 The LGA subsequently thanked Social Services North West for "a very useful meeting", and said they would take some of the issues forward in the next few weeks. It was pleasing to note that Councillor Stringfellow referred to the meeting in her opening address to the Social Services Conference in Edinburgh the following week. Referring to the financial pressures facing local authorities, she said she had been left in no doubt of these during her discussions with members from North West authorities. 2.3 On the strength of this success, the December meeting resolved to thank Councillor Stringfellow for her enthusiastic participation and that of her colleagues, and ask her to consider making the joint meeting an annual event. In her reply (copy attached) she promised to consider this, and asked for arrangements to be made about a suitable date. 3. Recommendation: That the positive response of the LGA be welcomed, and that arrangements be made for a further joint meeting on a mutually convenient date in Autumn 2001.
