PRESS RELEASE
From Social Services North West
13 July 2000
"PARTNERSHIP THE ONLY WAY FORWARD", HEALTH AND SOCIAL CARE CHIEFS AGREE
"A very positive meeting" was the verdict of senior social services councillors in the North West
on their "summit" with Regional Chair of the NHS Executive North West, Professor Joan Higgins at Warrington
on Monday (10 July)
Councillor Cliff Morris (Bolton), Chair of Social Services North West, said, "We were delighted to find that
Professor Higgins shared our 100% commitment to partnership between health and social care services in the North
West. We told her of our belief that this could best be achieved through creating the right constructive working
relationships between members, managers and professionals in the respective services."
Social Services North West speaks for the local authorities in the North West of England which have responsibility
for personal social services for older people, disabled people and children, and works to promote high quality
services in the North West.
The meeting, in which Councillor Morris was accompanied by Deputy Chair Councillor Brian Strett (Wigan) and minority
spokesperson Councillor Brian Roderick (Liberal Democrat, Liverpool), dealt with a wide range of issues, including
the development of Primary Care Groups/Trusts, resource allocation, mental health services, continuing care agreements
and performance assessment.
Various joint actions were agreed, including a meeting between health authority chief executives and directors
of social services in the North West to progress the partnership commitment at local level. Professor Higgins and
Councillor Morris will write shortly to all health and social services organisations in the region, informing them
of the matters discussed and the actions agreed.
"I am delighted with the meeting and the spirit of partnership in which it took place," concluded Councillor
Morris. "We have agreed to meet again early in 2001 to review progress".
