MEETING ON 16 MARCH 2001 AT HALTON REPORT OF THE CO-ORDINATOR 1. Matter for consideration: Establishing links between the North West Regional Assembly and Social Services North West. 2. Introduction: A major objective of Social Services North West has been to forge closer links with other regional bodies who share common interests. Establishing meaningful links with the North West Regional Assembly (NWRA) is an important part of this on going process. This report outlines a significant step forward in this relationship.. 3. Information: 3.1. The NWRA is said by many to be a precursor of a regional parliament and Members will no doubt very pleased to note that an effective link has now been established between SSNW and the NWRA. Representatives of SSNW were invited by the Assembly's Economy and Society Key Priority Group to make a presentation about our work. On 26 February Peter Hewitt gave a well-received presentation to the Group. 3.2 Following the presentation, the Chair of the Group (Councillor Marie Rimmer, Leader of St Helens MBC, invited Social Services North West to nominate a representative to be co-opted to the Group. This will assist in bringing a social care perspective to several particular interests of the Key Priority Group, including the implementation of the NHS Plan, the North West Health Partnership, and social exclusion. It should also be noted that Kath Reade has stepped down as Chair of the North West Health Partnership Meeting and her place is now taken by Professor John Ashton, NHS Regional Director of Public Health. 3.3 Disability issues were also on the Group's agenda and reference was made to the NWRA's report 'Committed to Inclusion: Accepting the Challenge', which was presented by Kate Smyth to SSNW at its meeting in December 2000. It appears that the report is available in a variety of formats, though there have been problems in ensuring that the reports are sufficiently disseminated. Kate Smyth will be liaising with Gillian Bishop of the NWRA to ensure that all who wish to obtain a copy can do so in their preferred format. 4. Recommendation: 4.1 Members are asked to note the report 4.2 Members are asked to identify a representative for co-option to the North West Regional Assembly Economy and Society Key Priority Group
