MEETING ON 15 DECEMBER 2000 AT BLACKPOOL REPORT OF THE CO-ORDINATOR RESEARCH INTO DISABILITY ISSUES 1. Matter for consideration: Presentation of research into regional disability issues 2. Introduction: The North West Regional Assembly - working with disabled people - has recently completed research designed to give priority to Social Inclusion and disability issues in the Regional Strategy and Regional Planning Guidance. Researcher Kate Smyth has kindly agreed to do a presentation for Social Services North West at Blackpool. . 3. Information: 3.1 As reported to the previous committee meeting in October, research has been undertaken - utilising the Social Model of Disability - with Independent Living as a key underpinning principle. The aim has been to provide a description of the current situation regionally, in relation to the number of disabled people, the key issues in the Region and thus to recommend a series of achievable key actions with a realistic timeframe for implementation. The report based on the research is to launched at a Regional Conference on 11 December and Kate Smyth will have copies will be available at the SSNW meeting. 3.2 Following the decision at the last meeting to set up a meeting with representatives of the Regional Assembly, officers of SSNW have been in contact with officers of the NWRA, and an exploratory meeting is to be held shortly. The possibility of a member-level meeting will be explored, and reported on at the next meeting. 4. Recommendation: Members are asked to note the report and presentation.
