SOCIAL SERVICES NORTH WEST
MEETING ON 15 SEPTEMBER 2000 AT WIGAN
REPORT OF THE CO-ORDINATOR
CELEBRATING EXCELLENCE
1. Matter for consideration:
Celebrating the achievements of member authorities in recent times.
2. Introduction:
As part of the process of raising the profile of Social Services North West, and making others aware of the
good work done in the region, it was proposed by a Director that authorities should be invited to provide information
about externally-validated awards for good practice. This is a brief report based on initial responses to a recent
trawl.
3. Information:
3.1 Member authorities were asked to provide examples of relevant external awards such as Chartermarks, Investors
in People, and other validated examples of good practice. To give an idea of what has been achieved in our Region
and encourage other authorities to provide further examples a sample of achievements already notified is outlined
below.
3.2 It is hoped that other authorities will wish to add to the information included in this report. All responses
could be collated to provide quick reference points for informal benchmarking, as well as providing inspiration
for new initiatives in other authorities. It has also been proposed that such awards could form the basis of an
exhibition of good practice in the North west on occasion of the meeting with the LGA at Bolton on 11 October (see
separate report)
3.3 Examples provided so far include:
Lancashire Social Services has been awarded Investors In People status for its East Zone Learning Disability
Team and the Inspection Unit, and Chartermark awards for the Bankside Centre for adults with learning disability
and Crossways Day Centre also for adults with learning disabilities.
Tameside Social Services has been awarded NHS Beacon Status for the comprehensive work of its Mental Health Service
which includes:
an integrated Care Programme Approach and Care Management System
clear targeting of serious mental illness
evidence based psycho-social interventions for the severely mentally ill
partnership with the voluntary sector
Tameside SSD and the whole MBC was awarded Investors In People status in 1998 and were again accredited this year
for their commitment to staff information and inclusion in service developments.
Wigan Social Services has been awarded an Investors in People status initially awarded in 1997 and successfully
reassessed earlier this year. They have also received a Social Care Communications award 1999 (sponsored by the
Community Care and Social Services Information Network) this relates to the departments "Top Secret"
file for children in care which has been highly commended in the most effective public information category.
4. Recommendations:
4.1 That the report be noted.
4.2 That members indicate whether they wish further information to be gathered - with contact details - to provide
a resource for member authorities to consult, as a part of their endeavours to promote good practice.
